The figure is centered to place his interior life as the subject of the painting. His grip on personal stability is the vortex of the composition, and all the compositional elements bring your eye to him. His hands, large and gripping, underline his decision to remain firm. The gulls are individuals — each one a challenge or distraction. This painting belongs to two ongoing series: His World and Weathered People — explorations of what it costs to hold one's equilibrium and principles in a world that is noisy, chaotic, and relentless.

The company of friends and shared participation in traditions are good for most human souls. My nearly fifteen years spending time in Andalucia have left their stamp on my life with the culture of horses, flamenco and their fiestas and ferias. Nobody does companionship, costume and tradition better than the Andalusians!

The Laura series are about surrounding one’s self with symbolic beauty and protective rituals. Imagine the fine robes of a priest, or an empress, or in a procession. Here Laura holds around herself embroideries from Oaxaca, in which are embedded the hours of care by craftswomen.
