All the painters in our family have a passion for textiles. Here my wife’s Uzbek silk robe, with hand embroidery of swans and moons, warms family friend, Pheobe. The background had to be toned down in give center stage to the subject. Painted fully from life.

The Laura series are about surrounding one’s self with symbolic beauty and protective rituals. Imagine the fine robes of a priest, or an empress, or in a procession. Here Laura holds around herself embroideries from Oaxaca, in which are embedded the hours of care by craftswomen.

I met an interesting young actress in Russia, whose name was Tatiana. Painting her I used the format of an icon, like a pyramid, to bring the viewer to the subject’s face. She herself is sincere, and so the idea of personifying sincerity was an obvious choice. This is in a series of paintings called “Gossip.” Her integrity has calmed the vicious and noisy birds.
