I'm pleased to have shipped off a large painting of my wife, Melissa, walking out into the Gulf of Mexico. Its destination is the new home, in Mexico, of beloved art dealers who became friends and have recently retired. The painting will live with people I admire, looking out through the living room to the lapping waves just outside the house. It's a good feeling.

Now in situ in Baja, California.
The month of July, and for a few more days, I've been landscape painting in St. Petersburg. I graduated from the Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in this beautiful city, and I have family and colleagues here . My wife and I met here tweny-five years ago. the northern light makes for a very different landscape than I've been painting in Mediterranean destinations, so I was looking forward to the change. Unfortunately, rain and wind were not in my favor. It's been a logistical puzzle to get time in plein air without storm gear. More often than I liked I painted by the window on the landing outside our apartment. But there have been some very good days. Here, I'm working on a composition of St. Isaac's Cathedral near the Neva river.
Using every rain-free hour I can get in St. Petersburg.

I am looking forward to teaching a three-day course at Townsend Atelier, Chattanooga. The course will offer instruction and background on the Russian method of figure drawing. Evening one will be a lecture and demonstration session. The second evening students will draw from the nude model, and the final day the model will pose in the same position but clothed. This practice is to strengthen an understanding of how folds explain the pose. I look forward to spending time on this important subject. Contact Townsend Atelier for more information or to sign up for the course.
