Winner “Peoples’ Choice” at OPA Nationals in Charleston, 2023. The main loggia at Villa Vitalba fascinates me, because of the play of light on the arches and the red and white tiled floor. Guests spend hours talking and resting in this luminous space.
Oil / Panel / 27.5 in sq / Available
The Villa Vitalba outside Bergamo presents scores of intimate views onto its luxurious history. The light is amazing. I enjoyed using the light beam as a compositional force equal to objects with physical weight. I enjoyed the color scheme of burgundy with icy mint.
Oil on Linen / 20 x 24 in / Available through Gallery 1261
In this magnificent villa outside Bergamo, my wife and I teach painting courses every other year. The owners have enjoyed this estate as their family summer home since 1492, and one feels the lived-in happiness and bounty of this legacy. In this luminous hall we have demonstrations, dances, morning chats, and vicious ping-pong tournaments. The patterned floor was too much fun too ignore.
Watercolor on Arches / 20x14 in / Available at Cutter & Cutter Fine Art
From my recent month in Venice during the end of the 2021 pandemic lockdown.
Watercolor / 14 x 20 in / Available Cutter & Cutter Fine Art
La Fenice burned down a couple of times in Venetian history, only to be rebuilt. We lived in an apartment nearby, so I passed by their loading dock every day. Sometimes the water would be entirely clear, like glass, and sometimes passing boats would churn up the reflections like crazy. This is one of the variations I painted on site.
Oil / 15 x 39 inches / Available in Russia
I always liked gondolas for how they bounce and dance on the water. The poles provide a vertical geometry, contrasting the horizontal curves of the gondolas. The deep jade color of the canals reflects so beautifully.
Oil / 7 x 13.2 in / Available
This view sits outside the villa Montereggi. Florence is behind the last mountain in the background, about six miles away. Painted plein air.

A small study of an intricately tiled fountain in Essaouira, Morocco, where my family enjoy painting and exploring. Fine crafts are alive and well in the small city, and you see the results in the architecture in surprising places.
Oil / 78 x 39 / Available at Cutter & Cutter Fine Art
In the small fishing town of Essaouira, Morocco, I found this public fountain, sharing water and beauty with whomever needed the refreshment. Aged, but well cared for, it gave me a feeling of community and history.
